I wanted to create a collection of things I like and recommendations I have. This is especially useful because, before I buy anything, I spend days rabbit holing, aka, researching possible options. Perhaps it's helpful for someone to have that information already collected. Because, sometimes it is useful for me to have that information a few years down the line.
When it comes to purchases, I'm neither extremely frugal nor frivolous with money. I often wait for sales and coupons to buy something I want, and I'm usually willing to be patient. Of course, I'm not a professional reviewer, so my comparisons often come from gathering specifications and reviews, rather than using different product options myself, especially for larger purchases.
Some of these topics are detailed enough to warrant their own posts, while others are semi-detailed and fit well in the Blurbs section. However, most of these are small tidbits that I didn't want to create separate posts for.
This page serves as a text and link bookmark section for all the things I like and would recommend (and why). Over time, if I'm satisfied with certain items, I may not always check out newly released alternatives, which could mean the list might become somewhat outdated, so while it might not be constantly updated, I’ll aim to ensure the information remains accurate.
If there is a page link for a bullet point, use that for additional details. Otherwise, expand the "..." toggle below the tl;dr section for more information. For a quick recommendation, the tl;dr box should suffice. Use the table of contents to jump/skim between categories.
Software
- What softwares do I actually use on my Mac as a software enthusiast? tl;dr
After several years of using a Mac, I've settled on a set of apps and software that I can heartily recommend. I try almost 30 new ones each month, but end up using around 20 in total for all my needs!

Summary of available website building options, sorted from most to least recommended for use:
This document only talks about the first 4 options.

Gadgets
- Phone Cases tl;dr
Recommendations in increasing order of price
Google Store Mous Magnetic Super Thin Clear Case for Pixel 9, 9 Pro, and 9 Pro XL
"..."As an Android user, I primarily want two features in a phone case: a MagSafe equivalent and lightweight design. I prefer slim, compact phones over bulky ones. Currently, I use a Mous thin case weighing only 29g. While it's impressively light, the area around the charging port is too thin and tends to break when removing the case, though, this doesn't affect its functionality. Pitaka offers even lighter cases, though I haven't tried them, while Peak Design's cases are on the heavier side.
- Label Printer tl;dr
Just get the Brother USA Brother P-touch CUBE PTP300BT | Wireless Label Maker if you do not need to print labels in bulk.
"..."I have tried some cheap label printers, but my favorite one is Brother USA Brother P-touch CUBE PTP300BT | Wireless Label Maker . Something about Brother printers makes it so that their cartridge almost never runs out or dries. The tapes are really expensive though, so if you need to print in bulk, you are better off buying a brother laser printer and sticker pages instead, because that would come out cheaper in the long run.
Travel
- Luggage tl;dr
Recommendations in increasing order of price
Mokobara Mokobara: Luggage Suitcase & Trolley Bags - Designed For Modern Travel [India only]
Signature Hardside Carry On Spinner Suitcase Matte Green - Open Story™
Herschel Supply Co. Herschel Heritage™ Hardshell Carry-On Luggage | Herschel Supply Company
"..."I travel a lot, both short and long distances through multiple layovers that involve multiple airport employees throwing my luggage like a ping-pong ball. I also travel through a lot of airports where I end up completing the 10k steps a day challenge. I usually prefer something that is 100% polycarbonate and has hinomoto wheels. Handles matter too, but are much harder to test for.
If you are in India, mokobara fits the bill. In US, you can find away and Aer. For cheaper versions, take a look at target’s signature series. Quince does have a similar version but has a 1 year warranty, that I would not take. Another interesting option is Herschel, I haven’t tested these bags, but they hit all the right checkmarks. I have an older version of monos check-in bag that is perfect, but their recent versions no longer use hinomoto wheels. I would probably test the newer version sometime soon, to see if they are similar-ish in quality. If you are richer than me and/or have a higher budget, you would prefer Briggs & Riley, I have tested these bags out in the showroom, but they are way outside my budget.
I have used mostly all other bags — Samsonite (awesome handles, doesn’t roll as well on carpets), Safari, American Tourister etc.
Food
- Restaurants I Like
- Indian Curry Sauces tl;dr
Just get Seeti . And yes, their Seeti Better Butter Chicken Sauce - 1 pack is awesome.
"..."As someone who has been in US for the past 7 years (as of Sep 24, 2024), sometimes I am lazy and do not want to spend hours simmering down the curry sauces. And none of the packaged sauces are good. Except for Seeti . Seeti is a god send, has the perfect sauces, i.e., they taste just like how it used to back at home. They aren’t as cheap as jarred sauces, but they are cheaper than eating out at restaurants, just add your own protein and you are done!

Skincare
Here's something I want to say before giving any recommendations: Everyone's skin is different, and unfortunately, skincare is very much a trial-and-error process to find your best match. I have medium tan skin and occasionally get acne, though it hasn't been cystic or hormonal in nature. My skin is very dry, sometimes oily in the T-zone. I struggle with hyperpigmentation and slight facial hair growth.
When it comes to Korean skincare, I prefer ordering from YesStyle and Stylevana rather than American retailers. It's hard to identify counterfeit products, and sunscreens in the US often lack the newer filters. These filters, while rigorously tested in Korea, aren't yet FDA-approved in the United States.
- IPL tl;dr
That's why I ultimately chose us.braun.com Braun Silk·expert Pro 5 IPL: Alternative to Laser Hair Removal with 2 Caps and Leather Pouch, PL5157 , and I've had a good experience with it over the past two months (said on Sep 24, 2024).
"..."As I mentioned, I have medium tan skin and dark hair. I haven't tried laser hair removal, but for IPL, the main factors for effectiveness are the energy density (J/cm²) and flash speed. Newer models have skin perception technology that may not use the full energy on every flash, though you can sometimes trick it with white tape on the sensors or by using talcum powder on your skin.
Given the options available in the US, I didn't want to choose a cheap Chinese model. After trying us.braun.com Braun Silk·expert Pro 5 IPL: Alternative to Laser Hair Removal with 2 Caps and Leather Pouch, PL5157 , I can see a significant difference. Ulike Official Ulike Air 10 has a high energy ratio but requires sapphire cooling, which I wasn't interested in. Braun and Philips IPL - Hair removal device are the best options, with Philips Lumea being slightly better, but it's not available in the US.
- Sunscreen "..."
Given my medium tan skin, sunscreen used to be difficult to find. As a side note, I genuinely prefer chemical sunscreens and believe there is insufficient evidence of their claimed harm to human systems. So, given their benefits, all of my recommendations would be chemical sunscreens. Fortunately, they haven't been comedogenic for me, but they can be for you.
In 2019, I discovered Biore sunscreen, which left no white cast, and I absolutely loved it. The newer formulation though, has a strong alcohol fragrance, leaving me to explore other options. I settled on using SKIN1004 Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum SPF50+ PA++++ and YesStyle Black Rice Moisture Airyfit Sunscreen , both of which are perfect. They do not have any fragrance that bothers me, and are really cheap, work well, melt into my skin, do not burn my eyes and great all around. For tinted sunscreens, I now turn to YesStyle Artless Glow Tinted Sunscreen which is dark enough to match my skin shade, but honestly wouldn’t work on anyone darker. Tone up sunscreens from innisfree are good too, but they don’t shade match for my skin color, which is why I now use them on my hands and tattoos (something I learnt I should be doing pretty recently in 2023).
Cat Stuff
- Insurance tl;dr
I chose to go with Lemonade_Inc Lemonade Pet Insurance and I did compare multiple insurances in 2020, where it was the best option possible. Another good option seems to be Spot® Pet Insurance Plans For Dogs & Cats - America's Most Loved | Spot® though I have no personal experience with it.
"..."When I got my cat at the end of my third year as a PhD student, I initially chose to get a cheap health insurance, just to cover emergencies, no vet fees, no preventive healthcare. And then, the first vet appointment I had, I realized that vet fees was $50 anyway, and I was stupid to not having chosen a health insurance that could cover as much as possible. So, I eventually landed on using Lemonade_Inc Lemonade Pet Insurance , which was really expensive as a PhD student, and still costs a pretty penny.
The costs also increase $90-$100 every year, with my cat’s age. For example, it currently costs $500 for a 4.5 year old cat, in Washington (was much cheaper in Michigan), with $250 deductible, very much capped preventive healthcare (the part I am most disappointed with), and 10% co-insurance costs. For me, it is still worth it. When my doctor was worried about my cat’s heart health, every exam was covered (yes, including ECG). You need to get an insurance as young as possible for it to be useful, and its utility reduces significantly decreases if your pet has an existing health condition. The dental + flea/tick medication add on is in my opinion not worth it because the caps are so low.
I checked some insurance rates Sep 24, 2024 and here is what I found: Spot® Pet Insurance Plans For Dogs & Cats - America's Most Loved | Spot® is $684, does cover dental cleaning upto $100, doesn’t cover blood tests, but does cover prescription food. petsbest Pets Best Pet Insurance | Pet Health Insurance for Dogs & Cats is similarly priced and doesn’t even include dental or prescription food. Embrace Pet Insurance Pet Insurance | Top Rated Pet Health Insurance - Embrace is $864, and doesn’t cover any wellness checks, Rated Best Pet Insurance Plans | Figo Pet Insurance is $680 and does cover dental cleaning of upto $100 but doesn’t cover prescription food and MetLife Pet Insurance Cat Insurance from MetLife | Best Pet Insurance of 2024 is $660 with base wellness plan included. So, spot or lemonade it is (spot is almost equivalent in price considering dental cleaning and prescription food).
